Urban Food Forests

Did you know that the whole world was first covered with forests and thrived with an abundance of food and fresh water?

Almost everyday people come to my house to ask for food, money or work. People are struggling to put food on the table. Men, women and children go to bed without any food for the day in the town called Paarl where I live and this is also happening all across South Africa.

Therefore this campaign was designed to secure food in our cities, towns, townships to feed hungry people, create jobs, empower people, reduce crime, beautify our living spaces and even save our planet from destruction.

All over South Africa we face this problem of people without food. It is essential that we plant hundred thousands of fruit trees in our areas so that men, women and children don’t starve anymore. There are a lot of space to plant trees, in people’s yards, on the sidewalk and on all the empty unutilised spaces.

It is also essential to plant trees so that the earth can recover from rainforest and environmental destruction that is still taking place on an enormous scale. Trees take up carbon dioxide emissions from the air to alleviate global warming that causes natural disasters. The trees roots bring up lost water from deep within the soil to evaporate from its leaves to create clouds that bring us rain and fresh water for us to use.

Trees are beautiful and with their colours, textures, shapes, sizes, scent it arouses our senses and creates a pleasant ambience and feast to the eyes and ears as well as it attracts birds that make beautiful sounds.

Let us start with this campaign by planting trees in our poor neighbourhoods to create urban food forests all over so that people can feed themselves and at the same time we reduce our carbon footprint. The amazing thing about trees are they don’t need much care and provide food in an abundance with little effort. When we beautify our environments the inhabitants moods will be uplifted as well and it will make them happier and more peaceful.

Fruit and nut trees provides us with an abundance of healthy & delicious raw food. People can sell the surplus raw fruit & nuts to the public to provide a source of income. People can also preserve & process the surplus fruit & nuts to store for later consumption and also sell for more income. The great thing is they don’t have to have money to buy the fruit & nuts so there is no cost price involved and they can make 100% percent profit by selling it cheaper to the public via our co-op.

When people don’t have money they are likely to rob and steal from others. This campaign is also great for reducing crime by making our neighbourhoods safer.

Another benefit is trees produce a lot of blossoms for our bees that are currently under threat. Bees play a vital role in our food production systems and without bees we won’t have enough food. Let’s save our bees!

We are ready now to start with this campaign in Wester Cape, South Africa (Cape Town, Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Strand, Somerset West, etc.) to inspire the rest of our country and the world to do the same in their areas, especially impoverished ones that needs help urgently. We have all the resources: horticulturists, transport and labourers. All we need now is money to buy the trees, fuel, compost, fertilisers and pay the workers. This is a great opportunity to create employment and empowerment as well.
